DetectiveSergeant Tom Rich is a 27 year veteran and still a full-time member of the Summit Police Department in New Jersey, where he worked as a Patrol Officer, Detective, Juvenile Detective, D.A.R.E. Officer, Juvenile Sergeant, Patrol Sergeant and is currently a Detective Sergeant. Every day, Tom dedicates his career to protecting and empowering children through education and inclusion.
Sgt. Rich has been a keynote speaker at over 700 events nationally, reaching over 1,000,000 students worldwide. He has also been a featured expert on the subject of online safety and cyber-bullying for Good Morning America, CNN and Fox television. Most recently, Rich was named the 2014 Citizen of the Year by PROBATION ASSOCIATION OF NEW JERSEY.
Sgt. Rich’s goal is to create “teachable moments” to help bridge the gap between students and adults, be they administrators or parents. He aims to open the lines of communication through education and awareness by sharing both the personal and legal consequences of misusing technology, social media, and popular apps like Snapchat, Tik Tok, Instagram, Facebook and so many others.
Sgt. Rich challenges audiences to go beyond stereotypes, become upstanders, and to be aware of the dangers that lurk behind the screen. In doing so, he addresses the problems that children face using technology and how these pitfalls not only lead to cyberbullying, but also to dangerous behaviors like cutting and suicide.
Using videos and creative solutions, Sgt. Rich’s high energy presentations lead the audience on an engaging journey, showing how the many forms of communication available today can also be used positively. He reinforces the idea that character education and supportive school climates are the keys to changing our youth’s experiences.

Just had the pleasure of hearing Sgt. Rich speak at Wildwood Catholic High School. Tom is a dynamic, charismatic speaker engaging the audience during the presentation. When the presentation was over, not one person got up to leave. They kept him there for an additional half hour to forty five minutes asking questions. Sgt. Rich stayed and answered every question.
Many times during his presentation I heard the comment "Wow" from the audience. This is a must see for every school..... !! Especially for the kids!!
After hearing Tom Rich speak at a workshop, I was determined to bring his program to my school. We had been dealing with persistent cyber bullying, and had, up to that point, had few resources to help us with our students and their families. The program educated our students, staff and parents, and empowered all of us to assist the victims, the bullies and their families and friends. Our school community has a much clearer picture of what cyber bullying is, what it can do, and what the consequences can be, and we remain grateful to Tom for helping us create a cyber bully free environment at out school.
